ok -- I've gotten inquiries via email from a couple of different customers today about this, so I guess it's time to get more specific about how to create an addon domain in a hosting account. (sure would help if folks would post their questions in the forums so things such as this can be answered fewer times...)
1.) Purchase a domain and set the new domain's name servers at the registrar to the same name servers as for the parent hosting account. This means the same name servers (ns1 and ns2 etc) as your primary domain is using.
2.) Wait for the DNS on the new domain to fully resolve (a couple of days). You will not be able to successfully create an addon domain until the DNS has propagated. To see if the DNS has resolved on your new domain, you can go to http://www.dnsstuff.com and enter your new domain name in the DNS Lookup blank in the top of the right-hand column of the page. Select "ALL" in the drop-down list. Before the DNS has resolved you will just get an "unable to resolve" message. After the DNS is done resolving you will see the name servers listed, with the IP's etc.
3.) After the new domain's DNS has resolved you can go to your cpanel to Add on Domains. Add your domain. When you name a folder for it to reside in, be SURE that you don't already have a folder of that name in your web space. cPanel will attempt to create the folder you name. If it detects an existing folder by that name already in your hosting account, the addon domain process will abort.
4.) Ignore the "Serious Problem/Workaround" message. This is a cpanel glitch that the cpanel programmers have a very low priority on, because it doesn't affect the working of everything. If you create your addon domain with a folder name you don't already have, with a domain that is already fully resolved to the correct name servers, it will work.
5) The addon domain may not be immediately accessible until the dns cache refreshes/catches up. Give it a few hours then check it.
