I am having a problem with password protected folders.
I have created a user id and password and have apprently password protected the folder. When I click on the link in the web page it brings up the user id and password sign in box, then says that there is a internal error and will not open the page. I know that the user id and the password is right, but I cannot get it to work. Any tips out there on what I am doing wrong.

If you are getting Internal Error, then your Password Protection is working otherwise you'd be getting "Authorization Required" instead.
Have you looked at your Error logs? They will tell you what the errors are. In cPanel--> Web/FTP Stats -->Error Logs. Most recent errors are first.
Looks like yours are telling you a file is missing. Have you uploaded the file/s into the proper directory?

I have tried to get this to work and it appears that the file is in the right directory and that the user name is right. I don't know what is wrong, but I get this.
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@ycsar.org and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Are you using FrontPage or FTP to upload your web site files? If you have FP extensions installed and you use FTP to upload any of your files, it will corrupt your FP extensions and you will get this error.

I just noticed you *are* using FrontPage. If you are using FP then you cannot use the Password Protect feature from cPanel. This is because the Password Protect feature modifes an .htaccess file which FP is already trying to use.
To password protect pages on a FrontPage site then you have to do it from within your FrontPage program itself. Here's how:
Note: A FrontPage sub web and a folder under your domain are basically the same.
First, you will need to create a sub web that you want to protect. This sub web is the name of the directory you want to protect and CANNOT exist. Once in FrontPage:
1. Select File -> New -> Web
2. Click on 'Empty Web' In the text box labeled 'Specify the location of the new web' put in your complete domain name and the name of the folder or sub web you wish to create (i.e. http://www.yourdomain.com/folder)
3. Then click on 'OK' and wait while you new sub web is created.
Now that your new sub web is created, you will need to set the password protection for this sub web. You should already be in your new sub web. To verify, look at the URL in the title of FrontPage. To password protect this sub web:
4. Select 'Tools' -> 'Security' -> 'Permissions'
5. A 'Permissions' box will appear.
6. Click 'Use unique permissions for this web' and click 'Apply'.
7. Click on the 'Users' tab in the permissions box. You will see your current username listed. DO NOT remove this username.
8. Click 'Only registered users have browse access'.
9. Click 'Apply'.
10. Click the 'Add' button
11. Fill in the 'Name' 'Password' and 'Confirm Password' text fields and click 'OK'. If you want to add more users just go click on the 'Add' button again and fill in the new users information.
12. Click on 'OK' and the 'Permissions' box should disappear.
Now only your FrontPage username/password and the user(s) you just setup can view that sub web or directory.

;) looks like our messages are crossing. If you are using Notepad then why do you have FP extensions installed? If you're not using FP then you can safely uninstall your FP extensions from within your cPanel and life will suddenly become much simpler, brighter, shinier... sorry getting carried away (I'm not exactly an FP fan...)
