Hi there,

I was reading through the documentation on how to set up mail clients, and it says that we have to use the ISP's smtp server. But there are also documents that say that one can use your smtp server. How does one configure this? I receive a time out error when trying to connect, which is using the username+domain.com format.

Thanks

For a small number of ISP's (and this number is decreasing almost daily) you can use mail.yourdomain.com for your smtp setting, just like for your pop3 setting.

However most larger ISP's nowadays require you to use their smtp setting for all outgoing mail and will not allow you to send through your domain.

For example: In my home office I have to use my local telco's smtp setting because they won't allow me to send through anything else (my DSL setup there is through the local phone company). However when I was at the airport yesterday, I had to change my laptop's smtp setting to mail.mydomain.com because 1) obviously my ISP's smtp setting wasn't going to work there and 2) at that airport they do allow sending mail through other than their own internet connection.

The user+domain.com is only for use as an email account login name if you are using a secondary email account which you have set up in your hosting account cpanel. It is not a pop3 or smtp setting, it is a username/account name (or login name, depending on what email program you are using).
