I lost the content on my main site when I published to a subdomain.
I've found the backup icon on the c-panel, but the instructions
are a little vague.
If I click backup and then use browser to enter a file, will I send
what's on the web site to the file, or will I publish what's in the
file on the web site.
Ideas?

If you click "Backup" under "Backup Home Directory" this makes a backup of whatever content is on the server in your account so that you can download it to your own computer. The browse button here is so that you can browse to the location on your own computer where you want to store your backup.
If you want to restore a Home Directory backup you made this way, click "Restore Backup" under Home Directory Backup and browse to the .tar.gz backup file which is on your computer, wherever you saved it to when you backed up as explained in the previous paragraph. Restore Backup will overwrite whatever is in your web site with what was in your saved backup.
If you haven't made a backup of your Home Directory for yourself this way you don't have anything to restore.
The only solution for this is to ask us to restore a server backup for you. Please see FAQ about server backups here:

Other detailed info & instructions about backups can be found by entering the word 'backup' (without quotes) in the FAQ Search box which is in the left column of any page at our main web site at http://www.12wonderwebservices.com

Thanks Ann ... looks like I'll have to ask you to restore the backup.
I'll go to the link... and then back up per ypur instructions on my
own PC.
